Lara jerked awake at the sound of her phone ringing, she picked up the phone and looked at the caller ID; Jerkface.
Great, just perfect. Her cellphone shrilled loudly, even more aggressively this time.
Ugh! He just can’t stop now, can he?
The only thing that stopped her from hurling her phone against the wall was the little voice in her head that whispered; You have no money Lara.
“Yes, thank you little voice” she said to herself as the buzzing ceased.
Before she could bask in the new found peace, the shrill of her ringtone cut a path through the silence and waltzed right though.
“Damn it! What in the world could he want right now” she blurted out in anger.
She grabbed her phone and cocked her neck at an angle, enough to get a better view of the wall clock.
11:54pm. I’m gonna kill him.
“What?” she said as she answered the phone in her most angry-yet-classy tone.
“Do you spend the whole day being grumpy or is that just the attitude you go to bed in?” that all-too-familiar baritone filled the line from the other end. How he managed to be annoying and sexy at the same time would forever be a mystery to her.
She took a deep breath to calm the traitor she called a heart. Why was it doing back flips in excitement?
Be cool Lara, be cool.
“Jacob, what do you want” her voice sounded a bit husky but she caught it before she could give herself away. “It’s really late, some of us have to go to work in the morning”.
“Oh please, little miss prim. It’s Saturday tomorrow” he slurred.
“Doesn’t change the fact that I need to sleep. What do you want Jacob? ” she retorted, now losing her patience.
“Fine, I just wanted to let you know I’m having a house party again tonight and guests are already arriving. Just in case you wanna join in” he rambled on.
She closed her eyes, deep breaths Lara.
“I’m just fine, thank you. Remember to keep it down, will you?” she said knowing full well her pleas were falling on drunk ears.
“Of course, I don’t want you banging at my door again, a hot mess in your grandma’s pajamas” he chuckled, obviously satisfied with his sense of humor.
“Goodnight Jacob” she resigned, she was too tired to be petty too.
“Nighty night neighbor” the voice on the other end replied.
* * * *
Jacob hung up the phone and placed the cellphone on the coffee table beside him. He really enjoyed getting on Lara’s last nerve, he liked her voice -even if it was groggy like now. She was such a prude, a really attractive prude.
He picked up his glass of scotch and twirled it, quietly observing the golden liquor as it danced in the cup. Heaving a deep sigh he raised the glass to his lips and downed the content of the glass in one gulp. He rested the glass as the buzz immediately kicked in.
Reclining on his chair, he closed his eyes and let his mind drift. He remembered the day she left, with everything she had, including his heart. He was healing now but it would take more than time to fill the gaping hole that stood where his heart once was. All that was left to do was drown in himself liquor and host loud parties nights on end to hush the ever existent hum of silence she left behind.
“Who says I can’t take a break from work? Way to prove you wrong Annie” he let out a laugh that embodied more pain than happiness.
The doorbell rang, time to feign happiness. Pouring himself another glass of scotch and plastering a well-rehearsed fake smile on his finely-chiseled face, he went to receive his guests……
